Work in progress on a thached building

Thatch has been used for roofing since Saxon times and has a number of important benefits today. Thatched roofs are attractive, they keep buildings cool in summer and warm in winter.  Noise from traffic and aeroplanes is reduced, providing serene surroundings for inhabitants. In certain locations (especially rural areas) well laid thatch can add distinction and value to a property.

Because of these features, there has been a noticeable renaissance in the use of thatch on new buildings. We are happy to advise if you are exploring this possibility.

However, most of our work covers older properties where the requirements are for maintenance or replacement of existing thatch.     E. E. Sharp & Son can carry out an inspection of your thatched property and offer advice on any aspect of thatching or thatch care. We welcome enquiries and, should any work be needed, will submit a free estimate for using our services.

Types of thatch

There are three main types of thatch which are in common use. As Master Thatchers we are able to lay all these materials professionally and with care for your property.

  • Long Straw (threshed wheat straw)

  • Combed Wheat Reed (Devon reed)

  • Water Reed (Norfolk reed)

If you are not sure which type you need, we can advise. Sometimes, local planning or heritage rules can affect the type of material to be used. We can tell you if any such constraints apply to your property.

Re-roofing

From time to time it becomes necessary to renew all or part of a building's thatch. Some of our clients are concerned about the extent of disruption this entails and, with this in mind, we have included a special page in this website entitled Re-roofing which explains how E. E. Sharp & Son carry out this work.

Emergency Services

Thatch damage from fire, storms, pests or water leakage often needs urgent treatment. Requests for emergency assistance are given top priority whenever possible.

Extensions and modifications

Clients sometimes wish to extend their thatched property by the addition of extra rooms, windows, garage or outbuildings. We can suggest ways in which this can be done without destroying the essential character of your property.

Please get in touch with us (01252 860018) if you are contemplating having thatching work done. We are happy to discuss your needs and give you unbiased advice. If agreed, we will then submit an estimate for any work needed.

Estimates are free of charge and there is no obligation on either party until accepted.

Peace of mind

In the unlikely event of any accident, damage or mishap caused by our staff whilst working on your property, you are protected by our insurance cover.
